A 6-year-old boy with a hankering for a morning meal at Applebee’s crashed his grandmother’s car today while trying to go on a food run. The boy, whose name police did not release, was not hurt, but the car was damaged and some electrical service was cut off in the area of Greenway Drive and 120th Avenue after the car hit a transformer. The chain of events unfolded around 8:30 a.m. when the boy decided he wanted lunch from nearby Applebee’s, grabbed his grandmother’s car keys, moved his booster seat from the back seat to the driver’s chair and threw the car in reverse, police said. The car went about 47 feet before it hit a curb, but kept on going, said Broomfield Sgt. Colleen O’Connell. The car didn’t come to a stop until it hit the transformer about another 30 feet further east, she said. After the impact, the boy climbed out and went to tell his grandmother what happened, O’Connell said. The accident was called in to police as a hit and run at Greenway Drive and Evergreen Place.
When officers arrived they found the car still running and were met by the boy and his grandmother.
